ST. JOHN, Newfoundland, CANADA

Saint John is one of the oldest cities in the North America. It is a city unlike any other: cradled in a harbor, carved from granite, and surrounded by steep rocky slopes and hills running down to the ocean. It was founded in 1497, taken over by an English navigator in 1583, and later captured by the French and Dutch. This blending gives Saint John a unique cultural mix.

St. John's is located on the far eastern tip of the Island of Newfoundland, and is known as a "Nature's Paradise." It is a destination that most visitors will remember for its strikingly vast and picturesque coastline, lush mountains running down to the coastline, colorful buildings and remarkable Newfoundlander energy. St John occupies a spectacular site on one of the finest natural harbors in the world.

While in St. John's, enjoy long walks, seaside picnics and exceptional birdwatching opportunities along the rocky beaches. It really is a Nature Lover's City!! And because of its rich history, St. John's is filled with historic sites. One that is a must see is the Cabot Tower at Signal Hill National Historic Site, St. John's most visible landmark. Saint John is also well known for its colorfully painted old buildings along its winding and hilly streets: along Duckworth and Water Street are many shops and stores, and along George Street are many of the cities restaurants and bars. Enjoy your time in this historic and beautiful city and learn all about the honorable "Cultural Capital of Canada 2006."
